Gorthorm was a king of the human realms at ancient times. As the tale goes, he ruled during the clash with the elven kingdoms three thousand years ago, assuming the role of general during war and king during peace. Under his strict but just rule, the human kingdoms rose and prospered, eventually transforming from savages to a culture of remarkable sophistication.
Few historical accounts from that era survive today, but if one believes the tales, Gorthorm was a man achead of his time. Having been brought up in the elven kingdoms, he studied both the mystic magical theories and the subtle art of diplomacy. According to the legends, he established the first human nation almost single-handendly and founded academies to educate the population. However, Gorthorm was pragmatic enough to understand that his people were still barbarians, often finding it hard to put behind them years of tradition. As a result, in several instances he had to rely on impressive oratory and political skills to sway the public towards what he thought was in their best interests.
Today, Gorthorm’s legacy survives through the teachings of his clergy. The priests accept that, although freedom is a wonderful gift to humanity, there are many who cannot suffer its burden. Therefore, it is the enlightened individual’s duty to bear this burden, knowing that the prosperity of the community rests on his shoulders. In addition, priests of Gorthorm have little tolerance for incompetence, believing that only through focus and hard work can an individual become exceptional. The ancient king is worshipped by those in high positions in the social or economic hierarchy, as well as the politically inclined.
