The road not taken
Grace was born in the Andelia slums as the seventh child of a single mother who could hardly support herself. With a drunk mother and her older brothers and sisters off either warring or whoring to keep up their pitiful living, Grace found the burden of caring for her mother on her own shoulders. Grace hated her mother and the way she used her children, and when her oldest brother was killed by a rebel agent her mother spent his pension on liquor, not even bothering to have him buried. After this, at the age of 12, she ran from home, abandoning her mother and left for the north. Grace eventually made her way to Yorvik, where she fell on hard times, finding it difficult to make a living. Eventually at the age of sixteen, while selling winter clothes for a tailor, she met Jules Amour, still not yet a week into his time in Yorvik. He started trying to charm her with flattery and promises of grand castles, but it was the offer of a hot meal and a warm bed that finally got her attention, although she didn’t like the idea of being a man’s concubine she knew that things were only going to get worse, and it was better than the whoring that her sisters had been forced into down south. Over time the two grew into a sort of dependency with one another, Jules provided her with food and a better life than most Svodun women in Yorvik could ever hope for, and Grace provided him with a warm body when he needed one and a caretaker when he stumbled into bed too drunk to see straight.
